BlackBerry Projector 'Black-Box' a Reality?

This image is not real. It is only a depiction.
For years business professionals have been able to use their BlackBerry devices as a means to transport their work materials. In order to display a PowerPoint or other documents  in a meeting people were forced to either transfer the materials to a computer or use a 3rd-party projector converter (i.e. Impactica ShowMate).

We have been told by our leading source that Research In Motion is currently working on a portable projector, we're calling the 'Black-Box'. While we cannot confirm nor deny this, it sounds like it will make a great first-party accessory. The details are vague, but it appears as the projector will be its own detachable piece and not apart of an upcoming BlackBerry device (unlike Logic Bolt or CKing).

2010 sounds like it will be one very interesting year for BlackBerry. We cannot wait to see what else may be in store. Would you purchase this accessory to show PowerPoint projects? Do you think it could be very useful?

New BlackBerry Pearl in the Works?

We've received word on a new BlackBerry Pearl currently in development. We do not know a model number or its expected release date. What we have been told about the new Pearl is that it will be for a whole new audience market than traditional BlackBerry devices.

The new Pearl will be focused on those who want a simple phone, but still want the great experience of a BlackBerry with the push e-mail, etc. The keyboard will be completely different with only 12 or 14 keys. Basically, there will only be the 0-9 and * # keys that will house three letters on each number key. RIM wants to make the new Pearl appealing to those who want a less "confusing" BlackBerry.

We don't have any additional information at this time. It will be interesting to see if this new Pearl does arrive and if its intended audience picks it up. As we receive new details we will be sure to fill you in!

BlackBerry Storm 3: First Inside Look

Research In Motion is cooking up yet another Storm and this time it looks deadly. We first heard details about a 'Mr. T' (now codenamed Talladega), which is what many are referring to as the already infamous 'Storm Slider'.  There has been little to no details about the next brewing storm except that it should have a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. That was all we knew, until now. While we cannot confirm nor deny what you're about to read, we thoroughly trust our insider.
What we've been told thus far:
  • There are currently 2 prototype versions of the Storm 3 - One with a slide-out keyboard and one without a slide-out keyboard. Unfortunately for those looking to finally have a BlackBerry with a touchscreen keyboard and a physical keyboard, you may be out of luck. We're told that the keyboard-less Storm 3 has a 90% chance of making the final release over the Storm 3 slider.
  • The screen will still be a tactile SurePress touchscreen (sorry for those who wish it was capacitive). The screen is better than the Storm2 and will continue to utilize the Piezo technology. The screen is composed of 16.7 million colors.
  • The browser will be upgraded to include tabbed browsing. The tabs are at the bottom of the screen. We are unsure if this is going to be the Iris browser by Torch Mobile.
  • BlackBerry Messenger will be updated significantly to include skins. You will now be able to add themes and change color-sets.
  • Current early beta OS is 5.1.100.13. We are told there will be widgets (similar to the SenseUI). We do not know if widgets will be a Storm 3 exclusive feature or if they will become available on all 5.1.xxx.xx OS' for other devices.
  • 512mb RAM
  • 19 second boot time
  • Battery life has been improved tremendously.
  • Storm 3 will be thinner (about the size of the iPhone 3GS)
If all goes as planned, we hear that RIM may debut the Storm 3 at WES 2010 in April. As we get more information into the next of the Storm series we will be sure to let you know. Check back frequently or follow us on Twitter to stay in the loop!

BIS Severely Down - No ETA For Reconnection

Many of you may be feeling the pain of BIS being down. We know every time BIS goes down we get quite frustrated. One of our Verizon ninjas snagged us a photo of how VZW is dealing with the BIS outage. Apparently, neither RIM nor Verizon have any idea when services will be fixed. It looks as though VZW has received word that the BIS outage has spread to all carriers. Is this the worst outage? No internet, no e-mails, and NO BBM?! Let's hope RIM finds a solution and gets BIS working again, fast. How are you dealing with the issue?

BlackBerry Storm2 9550 OS 5.0.0.428 LEAKED!

BlackBerry Cube: Dual Screen and Full QWERTY Keyboard Slider

You may have seen the patent images of what is said to be Research In Motion's forthcoming 'slider'. We've discovered that RIM is working on another full QWERTY keyboard slider, which we're dubbing the 'BlackBerry Cube'. The reason we're calling it the 'Cube' is (as you'll see in the following images) this device folds into itself.

There aren't any specs on this device, just the ornamental design. From what you can see, it appears to be dual-display. However, it could be similar to the Nintendo DS, where the bottom part is a touchpad. Either way we're not sure if any of what appear to be screens are touchscreens. It shows a sliding full QWERTY keyboard and trackball. Also, a smaller screen appears on the backside (top of device when in its 'cube' shape) that we believe is for caller id, e-mails, texts, etc.

We know RIM has been working on this design since late 2008. Could this be another potential BlackBerry slider? This possible BlackBerry device has been compared to the Samsung Serene and the NEC 910. What do you think of it?

BlackBerry Bold 9700 OS 5.0.0.415 Spotted!

What you're looking at is a screen cap of a BlackBerry Bold 9700 running OS 5.0.0.415! We're estimating it will only be another 2 or 3 weeks before we'll get our hands on this bad boy. Thus far we've heard great things about it (much better than the recently leaked .405). We've also heard it is sporting BlackBerry Messenger v5.0.0.52! We're not solid on the details of the new BBM, but once we've secured if there have been any upgrades, we'll let you know!

BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.8 Shut Down!

Any one still using the first leaked version of BBM 5? If so, you won't be able to use it for much longer. RIM is officially shutting down the 'beta' of BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.8 on December 15th. RIM will be sending out PIN messages to any users still using that version notifying them to upgrade. Otherwise, those still running the 'rogue' version will experience problems sending and receiving messages as well as updates with their avatars. So if you haven't already upgraded (not sure why you wouldn't have already) head on over to http://www.blackberry.com/blackberrymessenger

Only thing is we heard it doesn't work too well in Opera Mini 5. Think you'll still use UberTwitter, SocialScope, or the other Twitter apps now? More pics after break...

BlackBerry's Could Be Banned From USA!

Research In Motion was hit yesterday with yet another patent infringement case filed with the International Trade Commission (ITC) in Washington. The new case was filed by Prism Technologies LLC, a company based in Omaha, Nebraska. Prism is claiming that the BlackBerry devices, desktop software, and servers infringe a patent for an authentication system that can be used with services conducted over the Internet.

Prism may be trying to force RIM into settling the dispute. The ITC has the power of a “nuclear bomb” in a patent dispute because the agency can order U.S. customs officials to prevent goods from entering the country, said Lyle Vander Schaaf, a patent lawyer with Bryan Cave in Washington who specializes in ITC cases, but isn’t involved in this one.

A tipster just let us know that there is an online wholesaler selling the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 OEM faceplate keyboard for only $14.36! You can buy in quantity; buy 80 pieces for $844. SquareUp Credit Card Proccessing Coming Soon to BlackBerry Smartphones

Are you a small business looking to accept credit card payments extremely easy and without merchant fees? Tired of using cash? SqaureUp, founded by the co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has already released a credit card payment system for the iPhone and iPod touch. They will soon be releasing it for the BlackBerry (most likely for the Storm2) and Android devices.

The SquareUp technology works by having you plugin the credit card scanner into the headphone jack. Once you scan the credit card's magnetic strip it converts the data into an audio file, which is then encrypted and transmitted to SquareUp for processing. The purchaser then signs for the transaction by swiping their finger on the touchscreen. After the transaction is complete a receipt can be sent to you by an SMS text or e-mail. You can also add a profile image to your account for added security.

With so many businesses utilizing BlackBerry devices we believe the SquareUp service will be a huge success. When it's released will you be using it?

Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 Now Available

Opera released Opera Mini 5 beta almost 4 months ago. Today they have officially released beta 2. Mind you, when they call it beta, they mean it. So far we've tested it on a Storm2, original Storm, and Bold 9700 with many operational flaws thus far. Have you experienced any problems as well? Nevertheless, Opera Mini 5 is visually stunning and fast. We can't wait for this browser to come out of beta!

New UberTwitter Images Leaked

Our good friend Mac from PocketBerry got his hands on a leaked version of a new Uber Twitter. Swindoe, the popular 'BLK Berry' rapper was the first to pass it on. There have been many upgrades in the newly leaked Uber Twitter app. Bubbles have been added to each tweet, which makes it look strikingly similar to boy genius' TweetGenius twitter app. A nice tab menu has been added, which makes it very easy to sort between your @replies and direct messages. PocketBerry also seems to have gotten a few OTA links for this app...

BlackBerry Bold 9700 OS 5.0.0.371 Leaked

BlackBerry Pearl 9100 Stratus Arriving December 15th?

Ready to get the next Pearl 9100? It may be coming sooner than you think. At least, an online cellphone retailer thinks so. You might have seen that we recently got our hands on a Pearl 9100 Stratus. We will dub it the 'Onyx Mini' as it felt and was almost a miniature of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 minus the full qwerty, but we'll get into more impressions at a later date. While we heard the release date wasn't too far off we couldn't help but begin a quest to find the answer. Needless to say, Popular Electronics, has started taking pre-orders for the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 and listing it with a $399.99 price-tag and a release date of December 15th, 2009!

We contacted Popular Electronics, who is in fact taking pre-orders, but they could not confirm the date. So why post that date? Your guess is as good as ours. Perhaps that's when shipments will arrive? Who knows. Nevertheless, they must know the Pearl 9100 will be in distribution and possibly soon. Otherwise, we think it wouldn't make much sense to list so soon, except to announce it will be arriving. We're predicting the GSM model will release Q1 of 2010 and the LTE model releasing Q2 of 2010. Do you think the rumored April 2010 release date is on point? What's your gut telling you the date might be?

*NEW* BlackBerry Pearl 9100 Stratus Hi-Res Images

  • The camera has a resolution of 3.2 MPX and flash

  • It has WiFi and 3G

  • BlackBerry Side layout is the same as the new BlackBerry devices

Sal already killed this device with a great overview video, but we should have our full preview soon. More images after break...

BeDroid Theme Review - BlackBerry Storm

AHaz and JMal designs have really developed an excellent Motorola Droid-like theme, BeDroid. The recent updates they've made to this premium theme makes it run flawlessly and look immaculate. The only error we caught was the battery-life icon didn't seem to show the correct percentage, it was a bit deceiving. Other than this, the BeDroid theme will make your phone look more like a DroidBerry than a BlackBerry. Check out the video for a full walk-through.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager Updated to Version 5.0.1.28

Late last night the BlackBerry Automatic Updater started pushing an update for BlackBerry Desktop Manager, version 5.0.1.28. We tried to do a screen capture, but for some reason it wouldn't transfer into our photo editor. Luckily, our sister-site, BBNews.pl, was able to get the screen cap above.

This wasn't a huge update (went from version .24 to .28), however, its brought support for Windows7, a simplified IP modem manager, and better support for the BlackBerry Storm2, Bold 9700, and Curve 8520/8530. Other than that, there aren't any new features or upgrades, just a few minor tweaks. If it didn't get automatically pushed to your computer get it here.

BerryWeather 2.0 Coming Soon

Our friends at PocketBerry got their hands on some teaser images of the upcoming BerryWeather 2.0, which should be releasing this weekend of following week. There aren't too many details on what will be included in version 2.0, other than what can be seen from screenshots. It appears that you will be able to set BerryWeather 2.0 as your background so you will see the weather at all times. We use BerryWeather and find it's one of our favorite weather applications. We can't wait to see what new customizations and enhancements will be coming soon. More images after break...

BlackBerry Fandango App Coming Soon

Fandango, the popular movie ticket website, has announced they will be releasing a BlackBerry app soon. There isn't too much info other than you will be able to check showtimes, watch trailers, buy tickets, and more (probably be able to vote and review movies). No specific device support has been announced, but you can head over to their site to sign up to receive an alert when it's released.

TripIt Coming Soon to BlackBerry

TripIt has recently released the free standard and pro app on Android, which has also been available for the iPhone. The travel management app allows you to access your travel itinerary direct from your phone, get maps and directions, make calls to airlines, hotels etc. as well as enabling flight alerts and alternate flight details for Pro users.

The BlackBerry TripIt app is still in beta, but is expected to release by the end of 2009.

Google Apps Connector 1.5 for BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES) Released

Google announced today the release of Google Apps Connector 1.5 for BES.
"With Google Apps Connector for BES version 1.5, large businesses can now support 500 BlackBerry devices per server, double the previous number. This lets them serve more users with fewer servers.

Small businesses get more flexibility too. The Apps Connector now supports BlackBerry Professional Software, which is designed for up to 30 BlackBerry smartphones. We've also made it possible for a single BlackBerry Enterprise Server to serve users in multiple Google Apps domains, enabling low cost hosting services to be offered by our hosting partners."
